Fifteen years of teaching, one street in Morabadi.
Shubh Sanskar Creative Dance Academy was founded in 2011 to teach Kathak properly — slowly, in order, and in the tradition it came from. Everything else we teach was added around that.
Taught in the guru-shishya tradition.
The guru-shishya parampara is not decoration on a brochure. In practice it means a teacher who knows each student by name and by body — who they are, what their ankles can take this month, and when they are ready to be pushed.
It also means an order that is not negotiable. In Kathak a student learns posture before footwork, footwork before spins, and spins before anything is performed. Students sometimes find that slow. Parents occasionally ask us to move faster. We do not, because the students who stayed with us for a decade are the ones who were not rushed at the start.
What that looks like week to week: small batches, corrections given individually rather than shouted at a room, and no student put on a stage before they want to be there.
From 2011 to today.
2011
The academy opens in Morabadi
Shubh Sanskar begins as a Kathak school near the Ramkrishna Mission Mandir, with a handful of students and one classroom.
2014
Folk and Garba batches added
Demand from families for group and festival forms leads to the first non-classical batches, opening the academy to younger children and to adults with no background in dance.
2017
Western and contemporary programmes begin
Contemporary, breakdance and jazz enter the timetable, taught alongside the classical syllabus rather than instead of it.
2020
The annual showcase becomes a fixture
Every batch performs, from the advanced Kathak group down to the youngest folk students. Performing is encouraged, never compulsory.
Today
Eleven forms, every age group
The academy now teaches eleven dance forms across weekday evening and weekend morning batches, with Kathak still at its centre.
